Franchise History
Hardly anyone noticed when the Miami Heat bounced onto the NBA scene in 1988,
as they proceeded to post dismal records for the next four years. The Heat
finally made the playoffs in 1992 thanks to the performance of outside shooter
Steve Smith and the ball handling of Rony Seikaly. The Heat would soon be
defeated by the Chicago Bulls, who would later go on to win the NBA
Championship. The teams fortunes slowly began to change after the 1992 season as
the Heat began to rebuild their offense, acquiring high profile players like
center Alonzo Mourning and point guard Tim Hardaway. Supporting players like
Jamal Mashburn, Voshon Lenard and P.J. Brown also joined the team, which would
quickly rise to the top of their Division. The Heats glory didnt come easy
though, as the team engaged in a bitter battle with their Eastern Conference
rivals, the New York Knicks. The Heat were forced to take on the Knicks in four
consecutive post-season series, defeating New York only once during the 1997
playoffs. The new millennium brought plenty of changes to the Miami lineup,
disrupting the teams flow and playoff potential until the 2003-2004 season.
The 2004-2005 Season
The 2004-2005 season proved to be a turning point for the Miami Heat as they
acquired three major players via a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. Brian
Grant, Caron Butler and Shaquille ONeal became a pivotal part of the Heats
defense, as the team went on to win their Division Title, playing the Detroit
Pistons for the Eastern Conference Championship. The Heat would eventually lose
to the Pistons in game seven. The Heat have continued to beef up their lineup
during the 2005 off-season, acquiring Jason Williams and James Posey from the
Memphis Grizzlies, and Eddie Hones and Antoine Walker via the Boston Celtics.
