level for approximately 100,000 years. This stone is therefore home to a wealth

the Estate. One of the most interesting finds on the site involved human remains
from nearly 10,000 years ago. This discovery suggests that Paleo-Indians, the
earliest known people of North America, inhabited the area.
Restoring a local treasure
Deering Estate suffered serious damage when Hurricane Andrew blew through
Miami-Dade County back in 1992. Since then, the Deering Estate Foundation has
raised millions of dollars through donations and government grants to help
restore damaged parts of the park. Planned projects still awaiting funding at
Deering include period finishings and artwork, a new canoe launch house, a
mangrove boardwalk, nature trails and repairs to the popular People's Dock.
